He started off with a couple of birds in a small flight mainly for the children. But as with most it soon expanded, and before he knew it he was supplying a local pet shop.

Ian had no ambition to show his birds, but one day Tony Pope came over to sort a couple out for him to support the HOTV show. He won best beginner young bird with a light green cock and did very well in a few other local shows, and that was him hooked

The following year and still a beginner, Ian entered the Welsh convention and won BIS with a grey green cock, which he says is probably his greatest achievement.

As Ian has moved up through the ranks he has enjoyed great success as a novice, an intermediate and is now more than holding his own in the champion section.
He admits that, due to work commitments, there were a few occasions when he thought of getting rid of the birds, but he’s glad he stuck it out, and now says
“I am very pleased with the quality of birds that I am breeding”

Although Ian keeps most varieties of budgie, he doesn’t have a particular favourite variety, but says he likes dark factors and always seems to do very well with his pied and yellow face lines.
